Welcome to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church
History of Our Redeemer
Our Redeemer had its beginnings in 1942 when Rev. Virtus Gloe began ministering to the needs of the military at the Lutheran Service Center on Lunalilo street. Permission was sought and granted by the Army and Navy Commission for the continued use of its service center on Lunalilo street for conducting chapel services.
On June 3, 1946 The Charter of Incorporation for Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Hawaii was granted and signed by the Governor of the Territory of Hawaii.
Quickly outgrowing the Service Center, in April of 1947 voting members approved renting the church at 1541 Young street. The building belonged to Kawaiahao Church.
December 3, 1949 ground was broken for the church on University Ave. The new church was dedicated on September 3, 1950.
